HEADACHE – NATURAL MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL

What is a Headache?

A headache is pain or discomfort in the head or face area.

It can vary from a sharp, throbbing sensation to a dull ache and can be caused by tension, vascular changes, or underlying health issues.

 Common Causes

  • Stress and mental fatigue

  • Eye strain (long screen use)

  • Dehydration or skipping meals

  • Lack of sleep

  • Tightness in neck and shoulder muscles (Cervical)

 Common Symptoms

  • Constant pressure around the forehead or temples

  • Throbbing pain on one or both sides

  • Sensitivity to light and sound

  • Heaviness in the eyes

  • Nausea (common in migraines)

 Lifestyle Role

  • Regular sleep patterns prevent trigger-based headaches

  • Ergonomic workspace reduces physical strain

  • Managing "Digital Eye Strain" is crucial in the modern era

  • Identifying and avoiding personal triggers is the first step to relief.

 Tests (If Needed)

  • Eye check-up – to rule out vision problems

  • Blood Pressure monitoring – to rule out hypertension

  • MRI/CT Scan – only if headaches are sudden, severe, or unusual

 Naturopathy Management (With Home Remedies)

  • These remedies can be safely done at home unless advised otherwise:

  • Hydration: Drink a large glass of water; many headaches are due to dehydration

  • Peppermint/Lavender Oil: Gently massage a drop onto the temples

  • Foot Soak: Soak feet in warm water to draw blood flow away from the head

  • Ginger Tea: Helps reduce inflammation and nausea

  • Acupressure: Press the fleshy area between your thumb and index finger

  • Cold/Warm Pack: Cold pack for migraines; warm pack for tension headaches

 Yoga & Pranayama (Home Practice)

Simple practices that can be done at home:

  • Relaxation Movements

  • Neck rolls and shoulder shrugging

  • Gentle eye exercises (palming)

  Yoga Asanas

  • Shavasana (Corpse Pose) – for deep nervous system relaxation

  • Balasana (Child’s Pose) – calms the brain and relieves stress

  • Uttanasana (Forward Fold) – increases blood flow to the brain

  Pranayama

  • Anulom Vilom – 10 minutes (balances the nervous system)

  • Bhramari – 5–10 minutes (highly effective for stress headaches)

  • Chandra Bhedana – to cool the body and mind

 Daily Care Tips

  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule for screens: every 20 mins, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds

  • Maintain a regular "Sleep-Wake" cycle

  • Do not skip breakfast

  • Practice "Silent Sitting" or meditation for 10 minutes daily

 Important Note

  • Seek immediate help if a headache is "the worst ever" or follows a head injury

  • Do not over-rely on pain relievers (can cause rebound headaches)

  • Avoid bright lights and loud noises during an attack
