COLD AND COUGH –

NATURAL MANAGEMENT PROTOCOL

   What is Cold and Cough?

A cold is a viral infection of your nose and throat.

A cough is the body's way of responding when something irritates your throat or airways.

 Common Causes

  • Viral infections (Rhinovirus, etc.)

  • Seasonal changes

  • Weakened immune system

  • Exposure to allergens or pollution

  • Secondary bacterial infections

 Common Symptoms

  • Runny or stuffy nose

  • Sore throat and dry or productive cough

  • Sneezing and watery eyes

  • Mild body ache or headache

  • Low-grade fever

 Lifestyle Role

  • Rest allows the body to redirect energy to the immune system

  • Warmth helps the body fight the virus

  • Cleanliness prevents the spread to others

  • Early intervention prevents the cold from settling into the chest.

 Tests (If Needed)

  • Physical Exam – checking throat and lung sounds

  • Chest X-ray – if cough persists for more than 3 weeks

  • Throat Swab – if a bacterial infection (Strep) is suspected

 Naturopathy Management (With Home Remedies)

  • These remedies can be safely done at home unless advised otherwise:

  • Salt Water Gargle: Lukewarm water with salt to reduce throat swelling

  • Honey and Ginger: 1 tsp honey with ginger juice for cough relief

  • Steam Inhalation: Clears nasal passages and soothes the throat

  • Herbal Decoction (Kadha): Boiled water with Tulsi, Ginger, Black Pepper, and Cinnamon

  • Hydration: Warm water, soups, and herbal teas

  • Turmeric Milk: Drink at night to boost immunity and soothe the throat

 Yoga & Pranayama (Home Practice)

  • Simple practices that can be done at home:

  • Activating Exercises

  • Chest opening stretches

  • Shoulder movements

  • Yoga Asanas

  • Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) – improves lung capacity

  • Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose) – opens the chest

  • Matsyasana (Fish Pose) – excellent for respiratory health

  • Pranayama

  • Kapalbhati – (Only if no fever) to clear mucus

  • Surya Bhedana – to increase body heat

  • Bhramari – to soothe an irritated throat

 Daily Care Tips

  • Wash hands frequently to prevent re-infection

  • Avoid cold drinks, oily foods, and heavy dairy (which increases mucus)

  • Keep yourself warm, especially the chest and feet

  • Use a separate towel and utensils during the infection

 Important Note

  • Do not take antibiotics for a viral cold (they don't work on viruses)

  • Consult a doctor if you have high fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing

  • Keep children hydrated during a cold
